February Round Up!

February was another exciting month in the STEM Center + MakerSpace North! We hosted seven workshops, a big weekend event, a volunteer orientation and our first Advisory Board meeting. When all was said and done we served 143 girls! That brings our total to 573 girls served since opening in November. The best news is that we are just getting started!

Over 60 girls participated in our first ever Cookie Case Race on February 10th. Girls had one hour to design and build a race car out of a cookie box before racing it against other girls in their age group. It was a great exercise in hands-on, trial-and-error learning.

We also hosted two Robotics workshops: one for Brownies and one for Juniors. Our super star volunteers from Intel and the FM493RS robotics team led both workshops and guided girls towards writing their own programs for their robots.

We welcomed two new volunteers to the STEM Center to teach a coding crash course in the Python language to Cadettes. Girls who maybe were apprehensive before getting started left with a much better understanding of coding, Python and how they can apply it to their own lives. We're looking forward to having them back in March to facilitate coding with Brownies and then Cadettes again!

We know that February and March are busy times for troops (cookies!) and we are so appreciative of every girl and adult who visited us. This will be a very exciting spring in the STEM Center; we're hosting even more workshops and events, including Make-A-Palooza on May 5th! Keep an eye out for special summer workshops and if you're in the southern part of our council get ready for the STEM Center + MakerSpace SOUTH to open in August!

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions. You can email stemcenter@girlscoutshcc.org with any questions or comments!

Hope you see you soon!
